I am currently training for my first 100 mile run, the Lean Horse 100 in Hot Springs South Dakota.
On July 9th, I ran the Dances with Dirt 50 k at Devil’s Lake – it was a great day for a long, hilly run.
On Friday July 22nd, I ran 11 hours and 42 minutes as a training run. It was hot and humid, so it was a great opportunity to practice hydration, nutrition, electrolyte intake, and sunburn control. By the 9th hour, I was pretty overheated, and called my friend Taylor Haley to bring me a popsicle. That helped a lot! By the 11th hour, I stopped sweating, so I called my friend Pam Culver to let her know I was walking home. Pam is training hard for Wisconsin Ironman, so she knows how to handle the heat. She met me with a huge bag of ice, a few Gatorades, and a bunch of bananas. She covered me in ice and waited until my husband Bill got home to make sure I would be ok.
Aside from a bad sunburn, I felt great by the evening. The next day I walked for a hour, and on Sunday July 24th, I ran for an hour. My legs feel great, and I am excited about the upcoming 100.
LAST 12 HOUR RUN!
On Friday August 5th, I did my last 12 hour run. I incorporated a lot of walking during the day, and loaded up on ice at every Kwik Trip. The day went MUCH better than the previous 12 hour run. Many thanks to Jim Stenulson, Becky Guinn, Tony Toledo, Roger Remus, Dave Bange, Wayne Jensen, and Cami Haley, who ran with me at various times during the day, and to my Very Special Coach Richard Chrz, who is unceasingly supportive, even if bossy. Note to self: V8 may SOUND like a good idea, but it is not a good thing to drink during a long run.
